"Italy Factoid"

Italians often believe that having a bird in the house brings bad luck.  Older generations never have a pet bird.  Some versions of this superstition include even bird feathers, especially peacock feathers with their potentially "Evil" eye.  Some believe this superstition came from the Bible, when Peter denied that he knew Jesus three times before the cock crowed.

Ministry Highlights - January 9, 2008

Happy New Year everyone!  We hope you all had a blessed Christmas!  We have been in Florida for the last several weeks with our family.  What a wonderful blessing to be home for Christmas!  We are now on our way back home to Italy and our ministry.  Tom has been carrying out his administrative duties via the internet all month in Florida.  Two of our ESL instructors remained in Italy for Christmas and have been carry out the ESL ministry in Maureen's absents.    Becky and Bess have been meeting with several ESL students and have been able to share the gospel with several of them.  Please continue to pray for Elena, Lilliana, Luciano, and Santina who continue to ask good questions and seem open to the gospel.

Personal Highlights

We traveled the state of Florida this last month visiting family and friends.  We also spent time fund raising for our ministry in Italy.  Our first stop was the Italian Consulate in Miami where, praise the Lord, we were granted our Italian Visas.  This means we are no longer illegal aliens.  What a blessing!  We then visited our sending church, McGregor Baptist, in Ft. Myers.  While there, we had a picnic with all of our prayer and financial supporters from McGregor.  What a great time we had celebrating what God has done in all of our lives this last year.  (Maureen made biscotti.  See her recipe below.)

Our children and grandchildren came from Pennsylvania to visit us.  We spent a few days with them in St. Petersburg Beach and at Disney World.  We also took our grandsons to the Holy Land Experience in Orlando.  We were overjoyed to hear our grandsons excitement over seeing the Jerusalem exhibit.  They are learning so much about Jesus and the Bible from their Christian school and East Swamp Church in Pennsylvania.  We thank all of you who have been apart of their spiritual growth and development as we are away serving in Italy.

Cranberry-Pistachio Biscotti Recipe

  • 1/4 cup light olive oil
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 1/2 cups pistachio nuts
  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together oil and sugar until well blended. Mix in the vanilla and almond extracts, then beat in the eggs. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder; gradually stir into egg mixture. Mix in cranberries and nuts by hand.
  3. Divide dough in half. Form two logs (12x2 inches) on a cookie sheet that has been lined with parchment paper. Dough may be sticky; wet hands with cool water to handle dough more easily.
  4. Bake for 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until logs are light brown. Remove from oven, and set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Reduce oven heat to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C).
  5. Cut logs on diagonal into 3/4 inch thick slices. Lay on sides on parchment covered cookie sheet. Bake approximately 8 to 10 minutes, or until dry; cool.

 January Schedule

We return to Italy and resume our ministry.  Tom is busy preparing to receive a spring mission team from Corban Collage in March.  We are also gearing up for Saints Bible Institute's winter semester.  S.B.I. will have 23 students this semester which begins the end of this month.  Maureen will have two new English as a Second Language instructors this semester bringing our total number of instructors to six.  She will be holding a training meeting for them later this month and then began the registration process.  Classes begin the beginning of February.  Please pray for the Lord to send us students that will be open to the gospel.

Support Update

While we our home we received several special one time financial gifts.  This really helps a lot with our monthly short fall of $1,442.  Please pray that the Lord would provide additional monthly supporters.  Italy needs the Good News!  We are hard pressed to do all that the ministry requires without full support.

To become apart of our financial support team, make your check payable to Saints Equipped to Evangelize.  Put our names on the memo line and indicate whether it is a special or monthly gift.  All contributions are tax deductible.  Mail your check to:
