"Italy Factoid"

The Friulians are an unreached minority with their own distinctive culture and language.  Little direct effort is being made to reach this people group with the message of new life in Jesus Christ.  (We are serving in this far northeastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giuli.)

Ministry Highlights - May 30, 2010

Our ESL classes ended the last week of April with over 100 graduates.  This year each class presented a skit in English as part of the graduation festivities.  They were very creative and entertaining.  Follow this link to see our Beginners Class making fun of their teachers:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNFn-ZWQIhM

We finished our semester with our annual May Day picnic at the SEE Center.  We had over 100 students attend.  This is always a great time for fellowship with our students and an opportunity of sharing the gospel one on one.

We also finished our spring Bible studies.  We had two Ladies studies on the Book of Ruth and one adult study entitled, "What does the Bible say?"  Eight women attended the Ladies studies and four adults came to the adult study.  We challenged them to read their Bibles and invited them to our church plant.  We are praying for fruit.

May has been a very busy month. SEE was blessed with a study abroad group from Bryan College in Dayton, TN and two evangelism teams. Bryan College used the SEE Center as a base for an Italian Literature class. This class enjoyed the Center, experienced our church plant in Udine, and was exposed to the lostness of Italy, as well as some great educational travel and studies. One student plans to return for the Spring semester here at SBI. Our month consisted of lots of hosting and kitchen duties along with lots chauffeuring and escorting. The second team was the annual evangelism team from Corban University in Salem, OR. Seven students arrived and went to work passing out tracts, doing VBS park ministry and performing mimes in the Piazzas...all during an abnormally cold and wet two weeks.  Although cold and wet, they never made a single complaint. They had good conversations with many Italians and our church planters are following up with several new contacts. The last group was also here for evangelism.  They were a Christian band from Lancaster Bible University in PA.  It was great to talk with them about PA as Tom is originally from that area. The band did six concerts and WOW! were they great.  They mixed in a few songs by Coldplay and Norah Jones, but always coming back to the Gospel message.

Teams are always a lot of hard work, but we are so blessed by them and their efforts.  Besides being helpful in our evangelism efforts, it is also an opportunity to expose students to SBI.

Personal Highlights

We had friends from Canada visit us this month, Matt and Leslie Zeller.  They are retired missionaries that we met in Haiti.  We had a great time catching up and doing some tourism.  Maureen has returned to the U.S. and will be visiting family and doing some fund raising this summer.  She has a friend from Italy, Chiara, and her 10 year old son coming to visit in June.

June Schedule

We will be doing lots of planning and preparation for the evangelism teams that begin arriving in July.  We also have some maintenance and work around the center to complete before their arrival.  We will be having our semi-annual staff meeting at the end of June.  In July, we will be hosting 90 plus people who will be helping us with our evangelism efforts.
