"Italy Factoid"

Italy has 16,145 people who are 100 years of age or older, 13,040 women and 3,105 men. Italy has some of the highest life-expectancy rates in the world.  The average lifespan for men is 79 and 84 for women versus 75 and 80 in the USA. Another good reason to live in Italy.  Must be all that good pasta and pizza.

Ministry Highlights - September 30, 2011

We returned to Italy at the beginning of September after a refreshing time of visiting family and friends in Pennsylvania.  September has been a whirlwind of activity preparing for the English as a Second Language Courses, visiting our many contacts, and the start up of Saints Bible Institute.

We have 12 American students this semester.  One of the students, Bess Velzen, is here with her husband Marcus, and was one of our ESL teachers 3 years ago. They are currently attending Moody Bible Institute and are praying about their future in missions.  We are praying that the Lord will bring them back here after graduation.

Jokingly, the thought has crossed our minds to rename S.B.I., Saints Bible Institute to Saints Bridal Institute and here is why.  We have a new missionary couple who has joined the S.E.E. staff, Martin and Lydia Armstrong along with their two sons, Marty age 3 and Matthew age 2.  They met here when Lydia was a resident director 5 years ago.  They will be planting a church in Pordenone.  This summer, our current resident director, Beth Hutton married Leo Mascia, one of our church members.  Our other resident director, Jesse Schreck is engaged to Jeryvee, a Filipino church member. And another church member, Genesis is engaged to J.C., a Filipino church member.  We are excited about all these young couples that the Lord is bringing together to serve his kingdom here in Italy.  The future depends on their obedience and faithfulness to the gospel. And we thank you Lord for allowing us old people to be a part of it.

Personal Highlights

We had a great time in Pennsylvania in August with family and friends.  We have a cabin in the woods which is a great place for our grandsons to explore.  We had lots of company...the Ruggles from Georgia, the Dumas' from New York, and the Henderson's (who brought Live Maine Lobster) from Maine (yum).  Tom got a lot of repairs done at the cabin as well.  When we retire from the mission field this will be our summer residence.  A highlight for Maureen was going to her 45th high school reunion.  It was great going back to Beaver Falls (also the home town of Joe Namath) and visiting with old friends.  Thank you Lord for the blessing of family and friends.

October/November Schedule

Next week we begin the Fall semester of English as a Second Language.  Tom will be helping Maureen teach as we don't have any other instructors this semester.  The Lord has blessed us with an abundance of new students.  We have been praying for students whose hearts are open to the gospel and we believe that this is God's provision.   We will be holding a traditional Thanksgiving meal for our students in November sharing the gospel and salvation testimonies. Please pray for us as we share God's word.
